365 Days of Courage #38: Get serious about what you're passionate about.
I had the absolute pleasure of being in the audience while Oprah interviewed Michael B Jordan for her Supersoul Conversations. My daughter and I LOVED him in Creed II and he was brilliant in Black Panther.
I was very impressed with him as he spoke with Oprah. At one point during the conversation she said to him “you have been well raised” as she was also clearly impressed with his perspective on life and the way he holds himself as a young man - he is only 32 years old.
She asked him what he had learned about life from his parents. He spoke first about his father and said that he had got his work ethic from him. He saw how hard his father worked.
He said that his father told him to find something that he loved or that he was passionate about and then to get serious about it. I think it is the second part of that advice that we too often neglect. We think that the love of something or the passion for something will somehow be enough. “Follow your passion” makes it seem as if no effort is involved.
But, in reality, effort is involved. If there is something that you feel drawn to with a passion, you still need to put in the hours. You need to commit to it and pursue it with passion. Put in the hours to master this thing that you lvoe.
So, in this month of love, think about the things that you love. That you feel passionate about. It might be photography or writing or painting or hiking or some other thing that lights you up. It’s time to get serious. To get down on one knee and make a commitment to it.
Are you with me? What would that one thing be for you and what would it look like for you to start to get serious about it?
