365 Days of Courage #6: "it is better to live your own destiny imperfectly …"


This quote expands upon the Lily Tomlin quote yesterday where she said: "I always wanted to be somebody. Now I realize I should have been more specific."

At midlife I think that many of us experience the shocking realization that we have been living someone else's life. We have believed the things that we were told by parents, teachers, society, and the advertising industry - the careers we should pursue, the relationships we should want, the type of house and car we should desire and the number of kids we should have. We have taken advice from other people - whether consciously or subconsciously - instead of trusting the one person who knows you better than anyone: YOU.

If you've been doing that for quite a few decades, it can be a struggle to remember who you are and the things, places, people you love and the experiences you enjoy. If you do feel disconnected from yourself, it can be really challenging to do yesterday's exercise where you are envisioning your life 3-5 years from now.
