365 Days of Courage #8: How do you measure a year?

Seasons of Love.png

Do you feel like you're living the same year over and over again?

There's a quote by Diane Ackerman that I love:

"I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well."

How can you live the width as well as the length of the five hundred twenty-five thousand moments ahead?

On days 5 and 6 of 365 Days of Courage, I talked about Step One in the process I use to plan a New Year. In Step One, you write down in as vivid a detail as possible the life you want to be living in 3 to 5 years time. Today I'm going to talk about Step Two.

Once you have created a detailed description of the life you want to be living in the slightly longer-term, I want you to think about the next twelve months. What projects could you undertake during the year ahead that would bring you closer to the life you have described in step one?

What are some of the foundational steps you need to take in order to bring that longer-term vision to life.

For example, part of my longer-term vision is living on a property where I have my own horses. I don't have a driver's license which would be a problem in that longer-term vision as most of the types of properties that would have space for horses aren't in areas where Uber is a thing! I have already found this a problem when I want to have horse riding lessons or spend time with friends who have horses and who live in the "middle of nowhere".

So one of the projects that I want to tackle in the year ahead is getting my driver's license. I learned to drive when I was in college but just never got round to taking my test. As I make a list of projects I want to complete in the year ahead, taking driving lessons and studying for my driving test will be one of the projects I include in my 12 month plan.

Another example is also related to my longer-term vision of horses being a bigger part of my life. A couple of years ago, I trained as an Equus Coach. Due to life getting in the way, I was never able to attend one of the final certification weekends. This is something that I would love to complete in the year ahead so that will also be one of the projects listed on my 12 month plan.

Another example is that I want to spend more time in Italy so learning Italian is something that I want to focus on this year.

This list will evolve as you think of more projects or tasks you want to accomplish or things or places that you want to experience so keep adding to this list over the next few days.
